Muskegon County Aerial Photography Information

2014 Orthogonal Aerial Photography

Leveraging a partnership agreement with the State of Michigan MiSAIL program, Muskegon County has acquired spring 2014 digital orthophotography from Sanborn.   This photography offers a scientifically accurate aerial image that serves as both the basemap and a functional analysis layer in the GIS.  The imagery was acquired over a series of days in mid April, 2014 and have a 6-inch pixel resolution.
This imagery is still being processed and will be available for purchase as well as in the GIS web mapping applications soon.

Orthophotography - a definition compliments of Wikipedia
An orthophoto, orthophotograph or orthoimage is an aerial photograph geometrically corrected ("orthorectified") such that the scale is uniform: the photo has the same lack of distortion as a map. Unlike an uncorrected aerial photograph, an orthophotograph can be used to measure true distances, because it is an accurate representation of the Earth's surface, having been adjusted for topographic relief, lens distortion, and camera tilt.

Orthophotographs are commonly used in the creation of a Geographic Information System (GIS). Software can display the orthophoto and allow an operator to digitize or place linework, text annotations or geographic symbols (such as hospitals, schools, and fire stations). Some software can process the orthophoto and produce the linework automatically.

2014 Oblique Aerial Photography

In collaboration with Kent, Ottawa and Montcalm Counties, Muskegon County GIS acquired spring 2014 oblique aerial photography from Pictometry
The imagery was acquired over several days in April and May of 2014 and features both 3-inch and 6-inch resolution in various portions of the County.  This imagery has been accepted and is currently being processed into the County GIS system.  Once processed, the photography will be available within the County GIS web mapping applications.

Oblique Imagery
Oblique imagery is imagery captured at an angle, providing an angled or "birds-eye" perspective.  This angled photography allows for easier photo interpretation and captures photos from multiple angles around the scene.

Historic Aerial Photography
Historic aerial photography for Muskegon County is available from 2013, 2008, 2001, 1995, 1981, and 1976.  Some of these photography products are available in digital form, while others are only available in hard copy (blue print) format.  Muskegon County GIS is working to digitize all photography to make it available in a digital format.
